Reclaiming the Soul: Why Preparation is the Secret to a Better Ramadan

As the crescent moon of Ramadan 1447 AH approaches, many of us feel a mix of excitement and a slight “spiritual anxiety.” We ask ourselves: Am I ready? Will I make the most of it this year?

1. The Power of Intention (Niyyah)

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Actions are judged by intentions.” Start today by writing down your “Big Three” goals. Whether it’s completing the Quran, mastering a specific habit, or maximizing your charity, naming your goal gives it power.

2. Start the “Pre-Fast”

Don’t wait until the first day of Ramadan to shock your system. Use the remaining days of Sha’ban to:

  • Hydrate early: Increase water intake now to prevent headaches later.
  • Ease into it: Try fasting on Mondays and Thursdays (the Sunnah) to adjust your biological clock.
  • Caffeine Detox: Slowly reduce your coffee or tea intake to avoid the “Day 1 withdrawal.”

3. Cleanse Your Digital Space

Your phone can be your greatest tool or your biggest distraction. Unfollow accounts that trigger envy or waste time. Replace that scroll-time with a Quran app or a lecture series on the life of the Prophet (ﷺ).

The Next Step: Before next week, try to spend 10 minutes in silence after Fajr or Isha. Reflect on what you want to “leave behind” this Ramadan.

Beyond the Fast: Setting Your Charity Goals for Ramadan 2026

With only a few days left until the gates of mercy open, our homes are getting ready, but what about our Sadaqah plans? Fasting is a personal journey, but charity is a communal lifeline.

In Ramadan, every good deed is multiplied. At Masazawaq, we see firsthand how a single donation transforms a life in our community. Here is how to structure your charity goals this year:

1. The “Daily Sadaqah” Challenge

Consistency is beloved to Allah. Instead of one large donation, consider automating a small amount for every night of Ramadan. This ensures you never miss the reward of Laylat al-Qadr, which is better than a thousand months.

“The most beloved of deeds to Allah are those that are most consistent, even if they are small.” (Bukhari)

2. Calculate Your Zakat Early

Don’t leave your Zakat (the obligatory pillar) to the last minute when you might be tired. Use this week to calculate your assets (gold, savings, investments). By preparing your Zakat now, you can ensure it reaches those in need exactly when they need it most: at the start of the month.

3. Invest in “Waqf” (The Gift that Keeps Giving)

Ramadan is the perfect time to think about Sadaqah Jariyah (Ongoing Charity). Consider contributing to a Waqf project. Whether it’s a water well or supporting educational programs, your reward continues to grow long after Ramadan ends and even after we leave this world.

4. Share the Iftar

Remember the joy of that first sip of water? You can earn the reward of another person’s fast without theirs being diminished.
